DSEK - Corneal Transplantation
About DSEK
Descemet's Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty, or DSEK, is a relatively new technique of corneal transplantation. DSEK is a partial-thickness corneal transplant procedure that replaces only the endothelial layer. This inner layer, the endothelium, is removed with its underlying membrane and replaced with the healthy inner layer from a donor cornea.
DSEK is prefered by some ophthalmologists because of the rapid recovery time, which takes 4-8 weeks rather than 3-4 months. Additionally, surgery time is half as long (about 30 minutes), and there is a low risk of rejection since most of the original cornea remains in place.
FAQs
Q: Why don't all ophthalmologists offer DSEK?
ADESK is a technically challenging surgery. Because of his extensive training and experience as a corneal specialist, Dr. Cutarelli is an expert at DSEK.
