What Is Presbyopia?

• Presbyopia is a condition that normally becomes noticeable for people around the age of 45 as the gradual loss of your eyes’ ability to focus actively on nearby objects.
• It’s a natural, often annoying part of aging that usually becomes noticeable in your early to mid-40s and continues to worsen until around age 65.
• In children and young adults, the lens inside the eye can focus on both distant and near objects. With age, the lens loses the flexability required to focus both near and far. You may become aware of Presbyopia when you start holding books and newspapers at arm’s length to be able to read them. If you’re nearsighted, you might temporarily manage Presbyopia by reading without your glasses. Eventually, aids including reading glasses are typically needed by the mid-forties.
• Presbyopia symptoms, like other focus defects, become much less noticeable in bright sunlight due to the action of the iris closing to a smaller diameter. As with any lens, increasing the focal ratio of the lens increases depth of field by reducing the level of blur of out-of-focus objects (compare the effect of aperture on depth of field in photography). The most common way people deal with this condition is reading glasses and bifocials.
