LASIK is an amazing procedure that thousands and thousands of people in America have performed on their eyes every year. Its results are great, the recovery time is minimal, and the effects can last for decades. So, how do you know when LASIK is right for you?

There are many factors that determine whether or not you are a candidate for LASIK. Unfortunately, not everyone can have LASIK surgery. Even so, there are other refractive surgeries that may be able to help you.

LASIK, however, is highly flexible. The technology used in LASIK surgery is so advanced that it can be used on a hugely diverse range of people. Over 85% of people who wear glasses are candidates for the procedure. Whether you have nearsightedness or farsightedness, LASIK can help you improve your vision. Similarly, it doesn’t matter if you wear glasses or contact lenses—LASIK may be able to help you.

Some of the factors that prevent certain people from being LASIK candidates include:

  1. Corneal thickness: The thickness of your corneal tissue is one of the key factors in determining LASIK eligibility. This is because the LASIK procedure requires cutting the cornea, and corneas that are too thin have certain risks associated with them.
  2. Eye health: The general health of your eyes is also a key factor. Certain diseases, eye pressure, and other factors may prevent you from safely receiving LASIK surgery. On top of eye health, your overall health may also be a factor if you have certain autoimmune diseases or diabetes.
  3. Prescription stability: If your prescription changes drastically or continually as time goes on, you may not be a candidate for LASIK. Your surgeon will speak with you about how stable your prescription is and what your options are for vision correction surgery.

While this is not a comprehensive list of all the factors that may prevent you from being a candidate for LASIK surgery, it covers some of the most common issues. Remember, just because someone you know couldn’t have LASIK because of a certain factor, doesn’t mean that having that same factor will prevent you from being a candidate. Everyone’s eyes and bodies are different, and it’s up to you and your surgeon to decide if LASIK is right for you.
