Many vision problems are caused by irregularly-shaped corneas, which means that if your cornea is misshapen then light doesn’t get refracted properly, causing poor vision. This is why glasses have to be measured and fitted specifically to your vision – they also refract light, doing the job in place of your corneas. LASIK surgery, though, actually reshapes the cornea, which allows light to properly focus onto the retina. This is done through the use of lasers in a quick, painless procedure.

The first laser makes a tiny incision on the surface of the cornea, which isn’t nearly as scary as it sounds, especially when you consider that other, less advanced practices still do this with an actual metal blade. We promise – you won’t even know it’s happening.

After that, the second (or excimer) laser is used to reshape the corneal tissue below with gentle pulses of light. This is based on precise readings taken of your cornea’s shape prior to the actual surgery. When done, light will now properly pass through your cornea to your retina, effectively fixing your vision. It’s like having built-in glasses that are always tuned to your prescription!
